This book provided an interesting insight into a time and place that none of us were familiar with, drawing thought-provoking comparisons between the relative freedoms of a young woman living with her parents in England or with her husband in Russia. It painted a picture of Moscow in the early 1970s and whilst we didn't much fancy it for ourselves we could see the appeal to Martha. There were mixed feelings about the believability of the character and the events but it was generally enjoyed.
